New Bern is served by a Craven County municipal water system, which meets federal drinking-water standards. Even on city water, homes routinely deal with hard water and the scale, spots and dry-skin irritation it causes.

Water in New Bern: where it comes from, and what it does to your home
New Bern is a city-water town. The city runs 15 wells that draw from the Castle Hayne Aquifer and treats that water at its own plant, plus five wells about ten miles west near Cove City that draw from the Black Creek Aquifer. The Castle Hayne water comes up carrying iron and manganese, hydrogen sulfide (the rotten-egg smell) and high calcium and magnesium - hardness - so the city softens it, disinfects it with chlorine and ammonia, and adds orthophosphate so the finished water does not attack the iron, lead and copper in the pipes on its way to your tap.
Treated and tested is not the same as nothing to fix at your tap. If you are seeing white scale and crusting on your fixtures and shower heads, or staining in the tub, the laundry or around the drains, that is your water telling you something - and if you are seeing it, it is worth testing. The two things homeowners here notice most are hardness - scale on fixtures and glassware, soap that will not lather, spots on the dishes - and the disinfectant. A correctly designed water treatment system addresses both, and it can fix the issues you are already seeing.
We also recommend testing the drinking water at every home, city or well. Older and leaking pipes - the service line into the house and the plumbing inside it - can contribute lead, copper and other contaminants on the way to your tap, and none of that appears in a plant or a county report.
Outside the city limits the picture changes. Homes on their own well get the iron, manganese, sulphur odour and hardness straight out of the ground with nothing done to it at all - which is exactly where an on-site analysis is worth more than any rule of thumb.
We take the same work into Bridgeton, Cove City, Vanceboro, Pollocksville and Havelock.

Common questions from New Bern
How much does the water analysis cost?
Nothing. We come to your home, analyze your water and give you the results and a fixed quote - no charge and no obligation.
Which system do I need?
That depends on your analysis result. In a city-water town that usually comes down to hardness and the disinfectant the city adds, plus whatever your own lines and fixtures contribute along the way. We design a correctly built water treatment system around your own results - and we will tell you plainly what your water needs, and what it does not.
